Backyard burning has been a common trash disposal method in parts of Illinois for years. Reasons for burning trash have changed over time, and so have the hazards. In the past, burning may have been the only option for many, but now there are safer alternatives available.
Many people who burn are unaware of the effects burning may have. All garbage realeases toxic chemicals when burned, even paper. Inhalation of these chemicals can be harmful to your health. Examples of chemicals released from burn barrels are benzene, styrene oxide, formaldehyde, dioxins, and furans. Depending on how long and how often you are exposed, certain pollutants can harm the lungs, kidneys, nervous systems and the liver. Short term exposure can aggravate asthma and affect other respiratory conditions.
Finding a safe alternative to backyard burning is encouraged. Reduce, reuse, recycle, compost and please properly dispose of waste.
