The Illinois EPA web site has been completely redesigned! A more streamlined appearance and content organization should make it easier for you to find information you need.  We hope any inconvenience you might have learning the new structure is offset by a better overall experience accessing necessary information.  We plan to continue to refine and improve the web site over the next several months. Getting Started

The Home Page consists of the following components:

  • The Top Navigation Menu
  • Featured Photos and Information
  • Audience Specific Information Centers
  • Featured Programs
  • IEPA Highlights, News and a Public Calendar
  • Right Hand Navigation Menu
  • Bottom Navigation Menu

Top Navigation Menu

The top navigation menu appears on all of our new web site pages. Users can return to the home page by clicking on the Illinois EPA image located at the top left of every page.

Informational content has been structured under the following categories:

  • Citizen
  • Business
  • Government
  • Educators
  • About IEPA
  • Contact Us
  • Services Map
  • Forms
  • Search

For example, an educator visiting our site could quickly locate educational resources and information by selecting Educators and clicking the appropriate drop down topic.

Talk To Us, Services Map and Forms also provide quick access to FAQ’s, locating services such as household hazardous waste collection sites and also locating forms. Users may also select Search and locate information from either the A to Z Topic List (an alphabetic listing of topics) or by entering search terms and hitting enter on your keyboard or clicking the blue box (Search capabilities will improve over time).

Featured Photos and Information

The Home Page features revolving pictures. Selecting the Learn More button on any picture will direct you to the associated content.

Audience Specific Information Centers

Above the Featured Programs Slider you may select one of four Audience Driven Information Centers (For Citizens, For Business, For Government and For Educators). By selecting one of the Four Centers you will be taken to targeted content.

Featured Programs

The Featured Programs section allows users to select information about popular Illinois EPA programs. Users may move blocks forward or backward by selecting the left/right arrows just above the blocks. By selecting one of the Dots below the Featured Programs you may move the entire page at once.

Environmental Highlights – Provides articles about environmental related news and information

IEPA News – Press releases regarding Agency topics

Public Calendar – A view of Agency related events

Right Hand Navigation Menu

The Find Services tool allows you to locate services such as Household Hazardous Waste Collection Sites within a geographical area. Popular Topics allow users to access information about Vehicle Emissions, FOIA, Public Notices and other actively searched topics. Tags provide another way to find information on popular topics such as air, water and land pollution.

Bottom Navigation Menu

The bottom navigation menu provides links to important information, programs and offices such as the Governor’s Office, Emergency Response Records and other topics. It also provides information on how to Contact Us and a link to the Agency’s Flickr photo stream.

Site Navigation Examples

This section provides a few examples of how to find information with step by step instructions.

Find Environmental Information

This example explains how to use the Audience Specific Information Centers. For this example we are looking for information about Electronic Waste Recycling as a Citizen.

  1. From the Illinois EPA home page, locate the four Information Centers and select For Citizens.
  2. On the Citizens page, find the category of information you are looking for. In this case, the section labeled "Land Pollution & Waste Management".
  3. Under the section heading is a list of most popular pages under that section. For this example, click Electronic Waste Recycling.
    • If the information you are looking for isn't in one of the lists on the page, try clicking the link labeled "More..." under any section.
  4. Once you are on the main page for a given topic, use the right-hand navigation to move through the specific pages for that topic.
If you can't find the information you are looking for try using the search function or the A-Z index under the Search tab located at the top of any page.

Find a program

Our most popular programs are located on the Illinois EPA Home page in the "Featured Programs" section. In this example we are looking for the Vehicle Emissions Testing program. 

  1. From the Illinois EPA home page, scroll down until you see the "Featured Programs" section.
  2. Locate the Vehicle Emissions Testing tile by clicking the green arrows to move through the list of programs.
  3. Once on the Vehicle Emissions Testing page, use the right hand-navigation to find the page you are looking for.

If the program you are looking for isn't in the Featured Programs section, try using the search function or the A-Z index under the Search tab located at the top of any page.

Find a form

This example explains how to navigate the Illinois EPA website to find a form. To locate an Open Burning Permit form try the following:

  1. From the Illinois EPA home page, click on "Forms" located at the top of the page. This will open the Forms page.
  2. Use the right-hand navigation panel to locate the type of form you are looking for. In this case, the Open Burning Permit is an air permit, so select Air Forms.
  3. The Air Forms page lists all the forms in the right-hand navigation pane. To see a list of all open burning forms select Open Burning Permit Forms.
  4. From the Open Burning Permit Forms page, find the open burning form that is most applicable.
